Scout mode catches me a ton of open water fish. If a school on top goes down, I can hang right with them. The key to scout mode is getting mount where you can tweak the angle like the Fish Obsessed or Rytek. The factory mount is angled way too low for most applications. When you are using it shallow it needs to be almost 90 degree angle to the trolling motor shaft.
